Cocktail Recipes Categorization

We strive to do a precise categorization of all our cocktails, to help you browse through our recipes and find exactly what you are looking for. There are many different schools of thought on how to categorize cocktails, so we have chosen one that we personally think most accurately captures the characteristics of the different types of cocktails.

Our categories

  • Sours: Cocktails with a base spirit, citrus juice, and sugar – sometimes with liqueurs serving as the sugar component.
  • Spirit-Forward: Cocktails with a heavy focus on the base spirit – often with a modifier like Vermouth or bitters.
  • Champagne: Cocktails where champagne or sparkling wine is the main component.
  • Trios: Cocktails that traditionally have 3 ingredients – typically dessert cocktails with cream.
  • Highballs: Cocktails with a base spirit and a lengthener such as club soda, ginger ale, or cola – any Collins or Fizz goes in this category.
  • Juleps: Cocktails with a focus on muddling fresh ingredients, usually mint, and they are mostly served on crushed ice – Smashes also go in this category.
  • Hot Drinks: Cocktails that are served warm.
  • Flips and Nogs: Cocktails that contain a whole egg.
  • Tiki: Tropical cocktails with a focus on fresh juice from tropical fruits, like pineapple and passion fruit, often with Rum as a base spirit – this category contains all tropical cocktails, not only of Polynesian origin.

What makes World of Mixology cocktail recipes unique?

Two aspects are central to any World of Mixology recipes, the cocktail has to be delicious and of high quality, plus it has to be as accessible to make as possible.

  • High Quality: We keep the quality up by only posting cocktails that we personally enjoy drinking. We prioritize quality over quantity, which is why you won’t find hundreds of recipes on the site. That being said, we still try to bring a wide variety of cocktails, from different categories, places and times, to ensure you can find something that fits your taste.
  • Accessibility: We try to make our recipes accessible by always outlining the broadest category for any ingredient and only thereafter recommend a more specific type or brand. As an example, in a recipe for a Whiskey Sour, we would put Whiskey in the recipe, but in the detailed description specify that we prefer and recommend using Bourbon and which brand we personally enjoy. We believe this is the best way to get the full overview of what cocktails you can make with the bottles you have in stock in your home bar.
