History

The Whiskey Sour’s history dates back to the mid-19th century. The first known print of a sour recipe is found in Jerry Thomas’ 1862 book, “How to Mix Drinks”. Jerry Thomas mentions a Brandy Sour, though not specifically a Whiskey Sour, but 8 years later a recipe for a Whiskey sour is printed in the Wisconsin newspaper, Waukesha Plain Dealer. Its origins likely predate this publication though, as sailors commonly drank spirits mixed with citrus to prevent scurvy during long sea voyages. In the following period, the combination of whiskey, lemon juice, and sugar became popular in the United States, and was a staple in bars around the country. Over the years, the Whiskey Sour has seen various adaptations, including the addition of egg white, and later a red wine float in the New York Sour. Despite changing trends in cocktail culture, the Whiskey Sour has remained a staple, cherished for its simplicity, balance, and the ability to showcase the whiskey’s character.

Flavor profile

The Whiskey Sour is a harmonious blend of sweet, sour, and strong flavors. The whiskey’s rich, caramel notes form the drink’s robust backbone, offering depth and warmth. Fresh lemon juice cuts through with its bright, tart character, providing a refreshing counterpoint to the whiskey’s intensity. Simple syrup adds a delicate sweetness, rounding out the sourness of the lemon and highlighting the spirit’s inherent flavors without overpowering them. When egg white is added, the cocktail gains a creamy, velvety texture, making each sip smooth and luxurious. This frothy layer also enhances the drink’s visual appeal, giving it a sophisticated touch. Overall, the Whiskey Sour delivers a balanced taste experience, and serves as a base template for many other cocktails.
