Hurricane
Hurricane is a classic cocktail that’ll send you straight to a tropical island. The cocktail has been made in many different variations over the years, not only by shifting measurements but also by shifting ingredients. Two ingredients can be found in almost all variations though, dark rum and passion fruit. Our version is no exception as we follow the structure of what is probably the most common recipe nowadays, and this one has a few more ingredients and a splash of overproof rum for adding a bit more spice to the cocktail.

History
The earliest references of the Hurricane cocktail are from 1938. It was served in the “Hurricane Bar” at the 1939–1940 New York World’s Fair, but it is unknown what components were used to make the Hurricane drinks that were sold there. The Warner Brothers movie “Naughty But Nice,” which was released in July 1939, gives the best depiction of the original Hurricane recipe and appearance. In this movie, the cocktail appears to be made simply from lemonade or lemon juice with the addition of a generous amount of rum, and little to nothing else. That is, of course, a big difference from today’s common recipes but it is quite interesting to see its evolution.
Flavor profile
The first thing you taste when you take a sip of this cocktail is the orange and that’s why it is extremely important to use freshly squeezed orange juice! The orange taste is then accompanied by the sweet and tropical taste from the passion fruit syrup. This sweetness is balanced out with the acidity from the lime and the grenadine, which also adds a bit of edge to the cocktail. Lastly, the depth and spice of this cocktail come from the rum. It’s, therefore, important to use high quality rums, or this cocktail will fall flat.
